First Aid In Action

When an accident or medical emergency occurs, your ability to confidently respond immediately could literally be a matter of life and death.

How prepared would you be to take immediate action and provide assistance to someone in need of urgent care? In most cases, first aid is performed by passers-by who are usually members of the public. Trained individuals can provide basic medical care to treat minor injuries and preserve life until professional medical help arrives.

The Barbados Red Cross is a key player in ensuring that every home, community and workplace in Barbados has someone trained in First Aid. Through our First Aid service, we aim to build a more resilient Barbados.

First aid has been at the heart of the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement since we were founded more than 150 years ago. Our classes blend theory and practice – providing fun, interactive and practical knowledge during our one-day class. Experienced and trained instructors will guide participants through a range of exercises to best ensure that they gain hands-on experience and the confidence to react immediately in times of need.

We work with companies, individuals and communities to provide First Aid training to meet their needs.

Participants receive certification that is valid for two years and our training meets the standards of the International Consensus on CPR and Emergency Cardiovascular Care (ECC) Science; and the International Committee on Resuscitation.

Wilderness First Aid

Wilderness and Remote First Aid involves the treatment given to an injured or ill person in a remote environment in the absence of a healthcare professional and rapid emergency transport to such care. Remote settings include areas or circumstances in which help is at least one hour away. Our Wilderness programme builds learner’s capabilities through scenarios that utilize role-playing and moulage.

Psychological First Aid

Anyone might find themselves in a situation where they come across an individual in distress, requiring both emotional and practical support— commonly known as psychological first aid (PFA). Crises are a part of life, ranging from personal, affecting an individual, to larger events that impact numerous people. Regardless of the scale, those experiencing a crisis may benefit from psychological first aid.

Psychological first aid is a straightforward yet potent approach to assisting someone in distress. It involves being attentive to the person’s responses, engaging in active listening, and, when applicable, offering practical assistance to address immediate issues and fundamental needs. Acquiring PFA skills and understanding reactions to crises not only empowers the helper to assist others but also equips them to apply the same skills to navigate their own crises.

Through our two-day PFA training we provide participants with practical skills to provide PFA and support in times of crisis.
